In the end, I decided on going with my Red White Humans this time after several suggestions from my friends. Here is a summary of what went down...

Didn't really know what to expect from the first match of the night, and I most certainly wasn't expecting this monstrocity. I'm still not fully sure what you would have called his deck, it focused on getting Gilded Lotus out on the field and using the extra mana to push out some of his nastier cards. Prior to that, it was all about control, kept destroying my creatures when it could. First round was fairly even, I was producing enough creatures to keep hitting him fairly well in the early game, but the tide turned as soon as he got Vampire Nighthawk out and later Nicol Bolas. Between those two cards, I couldn't get around his life gain and Nicol Bolas's ultimate. Round two fell more into my favor. I was able to produce a small army of humans and golems to eventually swing for lethal while he wasn't able to produce blockers or kill my field. Round three I was able to hold him back with all four of my o rings in play, but like the first round, he eventually got the upper hand once he got Vampire Nighthawk into the field, which was quickly followed by Griselbrand and Nicol Bolas.

As soon as I saw him lay down a Goblin Arsonist, I knew exaclty the kind of deck he was playing. This was an interesting match to me. To a degree, I felt our decks were very similiar, except I use exile as a damage mechanic while he uses sacrifice. Round 1 was pretty straight forward, he combined his Goblin Arsonists with Ring of Valkas to try and make them bigger while putting out other goblins to bring the pain. Unfortunately for him, it wasn't producing enough goblins and damage to keep up with my humans and golems. I eventually swung for lethal with Odric's ability. Round 2 started off the exact same way and he was able to get a better field out this time with a Goblin Chieftain and Goblin Wardriver with Krenko waiting in the wings, but I was able to defeat him by bouncing Kessig Malcontents with other attacking humans. Afterwards we discussed more about our decks with each other. He did explain to me that he added a splash of green to his deck for a few spells, but I forget what they were.

This had to be the toughest match of the night. I had heard of Planeswalker decks, but had not seen a fully fuctional one in person till now. The shear level of control in this deck is amazing, it starts slow, but quickly becomes nearly impossible to get around once two or more Planeswalkers hit the field. The first round started off with both of us getting a decent amount of damage out, but changed as soon as Tamiyo and Nicol Bolas hit the field. From there it was a slow progression to a loss. The second round was about the same, but he was able to get out all three very quickly. This led to him using Nicol Bolas's ultimate to wipe my entire field, lands and all, clean off the board. This kept me pinned down as I couldn't draw and play a single thing without his three Planeswalkers stopping me at each step. I could have conceeded at that point, but we were both pretty amused at seeing his deck at it's full potential and played it out to see how long it took for him to take out the rest of my life.

First mono deck of the night and I have to say, it was really impressive! Both rounds were about the same. He pushed out his Lanowars, Birds, and Rangers to help him get his mana out within a few turns and threw out stuff like Wolfir Silverheart, Rancor, and Dungrove Elder. This pretty much lead to him swinging with near lethal damage a turn! I just couldn't bring up the defense or control I needed to deal with that. After the match was over, I was pretty surprised that he had not won more of his previous matches with the speed he displaced in our's.

Last match of the night and it was a close one! I was pretty familiar with what this deck could do, since my gf recently bought an event deck that is also a B/U infect deck, but it did present some surprises. First round he was able to get me up to 6-7 poison counters with his flyers, but I was able to get enough humans and golems to plow through for the win. Second round was a lot closer, but he got in just enough poison counters to finish me off before I could get a final lethal swing. Our last round was no contest, he was able to get out a Blighted Agent, Inkmoth Nexus, and a Piston Sledge that killed me within a few turns. It was a fun match and afterwards we talked about our experiences with Magic and ended up playing a few rounds with some of our other decks afterwards.

Closing thoughts for the week...
I think I did alright for my first time participating in FNM. I definitely learned a lot that night and hope to come out next week for another run at it. As for my R/W Humans deck, I think the problem I saw with it was that I didn't have enough ways to deal with control and speed decks, which ended up being most of what I went up against. I did make some adjustments to it from what it was prior to FNM that definitely helped, but it was not enough. I personally think that maybe I should have played my other deck as it has a lot more speed to it, but it'll be something I will think about over the week. I did finish the deck I mentioned at the beginning of the blog, so I may bring that out for next time. In the end, I still enjoyed the experience, even with the losses. Hopefully I'll do better next week.
